Mumbai,  25yr old, Dr. Suhas Khanvilkar (patient) resident of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra was working as a RMO under Dr. Gauresh Palekar. He developed sudden pain & startling noises in both his hips. He reported this observation to Dr. Gauresh Palekar for advice. Post X-Ray and MRI he was diagnosed with Bilateral Avascular Necrosis (AVN) of both Hip Joints, where right hip was at stage 2B and left hip at Stage 1. AVN is a disease resulting from the temporary or permanent loss of the blood supply to an area of bone. Without blood, the bone tissue dies and the bone collapses. If AVN involves the bones of a joint, it often leads to destruction of the joint articular surfaces. MRI report stated that Suhass right hip showed irreversible changes in the femoral head along with cartilage collapse and thus, femoral head collapse. Since his left hip AVN was on nascent stage, Dr. Palekar suggested him to undergo a Core Decompression therapy. But as his right hip AVN was on advanced stage, Dr. Palekar offered him two treatment options, Total Hip Replacement OR Ossron™ - Autologous Osteoblast Implantation. He chose to approach Regenerative Medical Services Pvt. Ltd. (RMS) for 2 stage procedure Ossron considering his age and long-term results without any side effects of the therapy.

In the first stage of the procedure, Biopsy, Bone Marrow Harvest (10ml) was extracted from the posterior iliac crest of the patient on 8th June, 2009. The biopsy was sent to South Korea Laboratory, to Sewon Cellontech (Technology Partner for RMS) for cell culturing. The bone marrow stromal cell population was isolated and cultured to osteoblast cells (bone forming cells). The osteoblast cells were cultured for over 4 to 5 weeks and were sent back to Dr. Palekar to perform the second stage of the therapy. On 17th July 2009 the cells were implanted onto the patients defected femoral head with a special procedure called as a Light Bulb Procedure.

After the implantation procedure, Suhas was under rehabilitation where he was following non-weight bearing exercises as per a pre-decided protocol by Dr. Palekar. Currently after 8 months Suhas is walking freely and is symptomatically relieved from pain. Also his monthly X-ray and MRI reports are showing steady progress which has been observed by Dr. Gauresh Palekar and Mr. Satyen Sanghavi, Chief Scientific Officer, RMS regularly.

Talking about his initial suffering from AVN and recovery after Ossron therapy, Dr. Suhas Khanvilkar said, From June 2009 I started experiencing sudden pain & startling noises in my hips and I was diagnosed with Bilateral AVN in both hip joints. With Dr. Palekars guidance and suggestion, I chose to undergo Ossron, Autologous Osteoblast Implantation from RMS Regrow as it was too early for hip replacement surgery, considering my age. I am happy that our decision was right due to which I am completely free from pain and back to my normal life.

Describing about the disease, Avascular Necrosis, Dr. Gauresh Palekar said, There are many causes for AVN such as prolonged use of steroids, alcohol, sickle cell disease, but some of the cases are idiopathic (reason not known). In Suhass case, it was observed that the cause for AVN was unknown and due to the advanced stage in right hip there were only two preferable options left to cure his hip. We decided to go for Ossron therapy which was introduced by RMS in India and he is currently in the process of complete recovery.

Talking about the cell therapy, Mr. Satyen Sanghvi, Chief Scientific Officer, RMS Regrow said, Ossron™ - Autologous Osteoblast Implantation is for the patients suffering from bone disorders. It involves extraction of cell tissues from the patients bone marrow, which are implanted in the affected area once cultured for a period of 4-5 weeks. We are glad to see the positive signs of recovery in Suhas through our offered treatment.

Ossron™ is the first biological product to acquire KFDA in the year 2008 after successful multi-centric clinical trials results. Ossron™ technology is exclusively available from RMS Pvt. Ltd. who has recently established a cell culturing facility at Lonavala, Maharashtra.
