Pune,Jazz Club and Ishanya bring Punekars a delightful treat – Pune Jazz Utsav -- a rare treat for Jazz enthusiasts on January 04, 2009 at 6.30 pm onwards. Ishanya is Indias largest Design Centre and Specialty Mall.
For the first time, Pune has been included in the Jazz Utsav map of India. Pune Jazz Utsav will be staged at Ishanyas 500 plus seater amphitheatre which is Western Indias first and finest. It is located opposite the Golf Course on Airport Road, Yerawada, Pune. Ishanyas state of the art amphitheater is among the finest in this part of the world complete with rehearsal rooms, green rooms, and all support functions to enable use for versatile purposes like for business launches during the day and performing arts at night. It is also home to Indias first laser and waterworks show – Fantasia Magic.
Pune Jazz Utsav is presented by Ishanya in association with Pune Jazz Club and supported by Kingfisher as Airlines partner, Radio Mirchi as Radio partner, Hospitality partners – Deccan Rendezvous, Sonodyne as Sound Partner, Music Instruments by Furtados & Ground Transport by Shree Swami Samarth Tours & Travels.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr Soli J Sorabjee, Former Attorney General of India & President, Capital Jazz said, Jazz brings together peoples of different races, religions and backgrounds. Its language and spirit are universal. I am glad that Pune, a cultural centre of India, is hosting Jazz Utsav. I wish the event every success.
The Jazz international festival features performances from musicians around the world and the annual coming together of jazz music, jazz musicians and jazz fans. Since the 1980s, when it was known as the Jazz Yatra, this festival of music has been one of the highpoints of the cultural calendar in the two cities viz Mumbai & Delhi. Jazz Utsav is a 3 day annual event that has been running for many years in New Delhi and Mumbai, showcasing international and Indian musicians. Pune Jazz Utsav will be a one day event to start with, which hopefully will expand to 3 days on a par with New Delhi and Mumbai next year.
Jazz Utsav is planned to be a triangular tour every year henceforth in all the three cities in India viz Mumbai, Delhi & Pune.
Pune Jazz Utsav will bring the best of international Jazz bands playing for Jazz lovers in Pune. The three-hour performance comprises 3 bands reflecting current global music trends.
January 04, 2009 will be a historic day for Pune in the field of jazz music. The long running and much acclaimed international festival, Jazz Utsav will be coming to the city for the very first time. The Utsav is being held at most spectacular venue - the Ishanya Amphitheater, which by itself is an unique destination and one of its kind in Asia. Ishanya and the Pune Jazz Club is leaving no stone unturned to make this musical extravaganza a grand success and embed it in the cultural map of Pune permanently, says Mr. Jehangir H.C. (1) The Jazz Junction:
Jazz Junction was formed in Goa in April 2004 by virtuoso jazz bassplayer Colin DCruz. The band made its debut at the high profile fashion meets jazz show Laffaire Xtraordinaire in Panjim. Soon after that the band stormed through the Down to Earth jazz festival at Campal and has since then, performed at some of the biggest live music events all over the country. Colin formed this band with a unique floating singers/soloists concept where a different singer and/or soloist is featured each time the band performs. This gives the band a different sound at every performance. So far the band has featured some accomplished local as well as international jazz artistes.
(2) The Adrian Dsouza trio:
it will comprise off Adrian DSouza , Knut Haugsoen (pronounced as K-newt). Knut is from the neatherlands but now lives in Canada. He is respected pianist who plays with ingrid jenson & jamie haddad, both very famous New York musicians whom i know . He has many albums out.
(3) Southern Quartet:
Maarten Visser – sax, Holger Jetter-violin, Keith Peters-bass, Jeoraj George-drums. This quartet specializes in traditional Jazz, playing classical jazz standards as well as own compositions. The perfect blend of the electric violin with the natural sound of the saxophone gives this quartet an individual character. The melodic lines and the groovy rhythms are the pillars of the group. An evening with those seasoned musicians promises a memorable jazz experience for advanced jazz lovers and first timers alike
A) Holger Jetter (Violinist & Composer)
He studied western classical music at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria. He is co-founder of the renown Modern String Quartet, playing Jazz and own compositions. He has accompanied Joan Baez, Mercedes Sosa and Konstantin Wecker and recorded and played with excellent Jazz musician such as Charlie Mariano. His broad stylistic and artistic interest subsequently moved him from the bluegrass band Flying Spoon Acoustic Band via the Argentinean tango ensemble Quartetto Tango and klezmer music at the Theater der Jugend in Munich to the Clowns duo Conelli.During the last decade Holger has mainly focused on jazz and Indian fusion music. His jazz fusion trio Three Raags” - combined Indian elements and Jazz with an emphasis on improvised music.
He has been touring internationally with several of his groups. Presently Holger travels in India, Europe and the United States, working in different set-ups with renowned musicians of the local jazz scenes on his latest project Holger Jetter Express (www.holgerjetter.com)
B. Jeoraj George (Percussion)
He was trained at DrumTech, an institute for drummers in the UK. Having gigged considerably at various clubs, Jeoraj is adept at various forms of percussion, especially jazz. His influences include the famous Latin jazz drummer Horacio Hernandez and the funk-styled Dennis Chambers.Jeoraj, who teaches at his institute in Chennai, is collaborating with jazz, funk and fusion bands all around India.
C. Maarten Visser (Saxophone)
He studied music at the Brabants Conservatorium in Netherlands. During his studies he composed and played his own material with various bands (Trinome, Moiré, Dudes Doo Dance). After finishing his western studies, he went to Chennai (India) and studied Carnatic music. He palyed in bands such as: MadraZ, Funky Bodhi. While working as a session-musician for the film music industry. Since the year 2000 he collaborates with choreographer Padmini Chettur, composing music for several of her contemporary dance-productions which have been internationally successful. Maarten Visser conducts workshop and organizes weekly concerts of experimental music. In Holland. Since 2006 Maarten Visser spends most of his time in Chennai. His recent work, saxophone solos will be released soon. Maarten Visser is currently working on saxophone duets and a new dance-production with Padmini Chettur.
D. Keith Peters (Bass)
He is a musician synonymous with the instrument he plays, is one of Indias leading bass players. Though working extensively with A.R. Rehman, Keith has, over the years, brought his diverse musical styles and signature sound to projects with Dr. L. Subramaniam, Zakir Hussain, U. Srinivas, Charlie Mariano, Billy Cobham, Derico Watson, Ranjit Barot, Louis Banks, Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ganesh Kumaresh, Kadri Gopalnath, Rama Mani, Sivamani and Amit Heri. With a string of live commitments and hectic studio schedules, Keith Peters is one of the busiest artistes on the Indian music scene.
