Posted: March 3, 2010    Send email
Pilani, Rajasthan,  Foundation stone was laid on 28 February 2010 for the BITS Alumni funded Community Center at Gyan Vihar behind Vidya Vihar campus of BITS Pilani. Besides providing a library, a classroom and a hall for vocational training, the centre will conduct various activities for the educational, economic and social transformation of the local community.

The Community Center project is a part of the \\\'Giving back to BITS initiative of the 1975-80 batch of BITS Alumni who formed the Alumni Trust in 2005 during their Silver Jubilee re-union visit to the Institute in the same year. The Trust has already started a group insurance scheme for the mess workers of BITS Pilani which is in successful operation from 2006.

Spokesman of the 1975-80 batch, Mr. Shivasubramanian said that the fully developed Community Center building would have three floors each floor having built-up area of 5000 Sqft. Work for the building will start soon, so that the ground floor will be ready without much delay in order to carry out the development programs, he said.

To begin with, the Center has tied up with NIRMAAN, a social service wing of BITS students for conducting classes for the underprivileged children in the locality. Several other reputed voluntary organizations such as READ, PRATHAM have expressed keen interest in associating with the project and discussions are in progress, said Mr Sivasubramanian.

Apart from Sri Shivasubramanian, for the groundbreaking ceremony, Sri Sunil Nanda, Sri Chandan Sengupta, Sri Gautam Mazumdar, Sri Jayesh Kharbanda, Sri Rakesh Kapoor and Sri Anil Narayan from the 75-80 batch had come all the way to Pilani. Prof LK Maheshwari, Vice Chancellor BITS Pilani was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
