The National Centre for the Performing Arts, Indias premier arts and culture institution, brings to you Paanyavarchya Paaklya:A Musical Journey of Poetry through Dance. This unique dance production by Vaibhav Arekar, inspired by Marathi poetry, will be performed on 21st May, 2010, at Experimental Theatre, NCPA, at 6.30pm.
For this new production, Arekar has picked pieces from both classical and contemporary poetry, mostly Marathi (Kusumagraj, Sudir Mogde, Roy Kinikar, Mangesh Padgoakar, Shanta Shelke, Dr.Aruna Dhere) and one Hindi by Dharmveer Bharti, which he will combine with dance.
Arundhati Subramaniam, Head - Programming (Indian Dance), NCPA, says, What makes Vaibhav Arekar interesting is the fact that he has explored the possibilities of collaboration between theatre and dance for several years in his works. This brings another dimension into his approach to dance. This particular event integrates Bharata Natyam and Marathi poetry, which promises to offer a distinctive approach to the genre of dance theatre.
Speaking on the performance that captures eight dancers in the spotlight Arekar says, It happens to be the 50th year of Maharashtras foundation and I thought I should do the show with Marathi poems. Every poem is independent with an identity of its own. The poems in the first half are threaded around love and the second half is about dilemma.
On Bharata Natyam being the main dance form employed in his production, he added, At many places it has been treated differently to give a free flowing look. As a choreographer it was exciting and rewarding to stretch the classical boundaries of Bharata Natyam movements to their maximum limit.
Arekar belongs to the new generation of intense dance artists, whose art and life is guided by the vision of promoting, producing and projecting Indian classical dance as a contemporary art. Trained in Bharata Natyam he is a dancer, teacher and choreographer who explores traditional, abstract and experimental approaches to dance.
The NCPA invites you to come and experience new layers of meaning through A Musical Journey of Poetry through Dance.
